A pressurised water leak can create a sound that travels through pipework and surrounding materials. Acoustic leak detection equipment helps us listen at suitable points and compare the character and strength of that sound. It is particularly valuable for private water mains, underground pipes and concealed supply leaks.

How acoustic listening works
An acoustic sensor or ground microphone is placed at accessible listening points along the suspected route. We compare the readings, surrounding noise and known pipe layout. Sound is influenced by pipe material, depth, water pressure, surface type and background activity, so professional interpretation matters as much as the equipment itself.
- 1
Choose listening points
Accessible pipe fittings, the suspected route and surface conditions help determine where useful comparisons can be made.
- 2
Compare the sound
The engineer listens for consistent leak characteristics and considers traffic, pumps and other background sources.
- 3
Narrow the search
Readings are compared along the route and checked against other evidence before an excavation point is proposed.
When this equipment can help
- Underground water leak detection in gardens, paths and driveways
- Private water mains and supply pipes between the meter and property
- Concealed pressurised pipes with no obvious wet patch
- Narrowing a likely access or excavation area before repair
EXAMPLE INVESTIGATION
The meter moves, but the garden looks dry
A private supply leak may allow water to soak away below ground without creating a puddle. Once normal water use and the supply arrangement have been assessed, acoustic listening at accessible points can help investigate the buried route. A dry surface does not rule out a supply leak, and the loudest point still needs to be assessed carefully.
Building the evidence with other methods
Pipe locating helps establish where to listen. A leak noise correlator may be useful between suitable access points on a known route. Tracer gas offers a different source of evidence where acoustic readings are weak or difficult to interpret.
Very quiet leaks, plastic pipe, deep pipework, traffic and machinery can limit the useful sound available. Noise can also travel along a pipe away from the actual failure. If acoustic evidence is inconclusive, we select another suitable method rather than guessing.
Compare leak detection methodsPreparing for an investigation
Please identify the water meter, stop valve and any known pipe route if possible. Tell us about traffic, machinery, pets or other noise that could affect listening during the visit.
Tell us the property postcode, when the symptoms started and what has already been checked. Useful details include changes in water bills, boiler pressure, the location of damp patches and any recent building work.
Contact us about your hidden leak
We investigate and repair residential pipe leaks from our Windsor SL4 base, with appointments across the surrounding service area. Homeowners and residential landlords can enquire about the £1,195 package; commercial premises receive an individual quote.

Your acoustic listening questions
Can acoustic equipment find leaks in plastic pipe?
It may help, but plastic and metal pipes transmit sound differently. Water pressure, fittings, depth and site noise all influence the usefulness of the readings.
Is a ground microphone the same as a listening stick?
Both are used to listen, but they gather sound at different points. A contact probe listens through a fitting or pipe, while a ground microphone is used at the surface. The engineer chooses the appropriate approach.
Do you also repair the leak?
Yes. We combine investigation, access and the plumbing repair in one residential package. We explain the proposed access before work begins and test the repair afterwards.
How does the £100 deposit work?
First, contact us about the leak. Once the job and appointment are confirmed, we send you a payment link for a £100 booking deposit. This is deducted from £1,195, leaving £1,095. Sending an enquiry does not take a payment or confirm an appointment.
